Introduction
DHP Tommy twin metal loft bed (branded Aesir at Wayfair) takes advantage of the iron’s shaping capacity to deliver this appealing rounded-corners look that works well in both a traditional and contemporary room.
The bed’s height is specified at 72.5 inches, which is pretty high. If you have 8 foot ceilings things might get a little cramped up there. But this also means the under bed clearance extends to the above-average 58 inches. Most kids (and some adults) would be able to walk underneath without bending their heads.
The guardrail is 13 inches high here. This is about average, or almost average. The manufacturer recommends to use a standard twin mattress up to 6 inches thick. Technically, you could use an 8 inch mattress and still be in compliance with the regulations, but 6 inches is a better idea. The more clearance between the top of the mattress and the top of the guardrail, the better. Plus, a thinner mattress moves the bed occupant further away from the ceiling.

The weight capacity for this bed is specced at 200 pounds at some retailers, 250 pounds at others. The manufacturer does not make this information apparent, both on its website and in the assembly instructions document. Safer to go with the lower number, I think.
The ladder is angled, which makes it easier to climb. It will also take up some room and generally be a little in the way. Those rungs look pretty thin and uncomfortable as well, might need some padding. Pool noodles are a popular choice, although some say they don’t last very long.
Three finishes are supposed to be available: black, white and silver. However, the silver version seems to be a little elusive, as it’s really hard to find even its picture anywhere. Plus all the retailers were stocking the black and white versions only at the time of this writing.

What Users Say About Tommy Metal Loft Bed
This is one highly popular loft bed. At the time of this writing it was not far from reaching 3000 ratings on Amazon with the average of 4.3 stars. On Wayfair it had a respectable 500+ ratings, averaging at 4.4 stars. These are good ratings. Not spectacular, though.
The Pros
Scanning through customer reviews I’ve noticed many buyers express a level of satisfaction with the product even though it may not be perfect. Calling it sturdy enough, admitting it does wobble a little but not crazy and anyway ‘tubular metal naturally has give to it.’
The bed seems to be popular not just with kids, but also adults living in small apartments. The ability to maximize space in smaller rooms is highly appreciated. The higher than average under bed clearance helps a lot here. It’s perfect for adding a desk, dresser, or even a small seating area. Or a crib, many families living in cramped quarters do just that.
The Cons
Some wobbliness and squeakiness has been reported. One buyer even went so far to cut the bed down some to remedy the problem. Other than that, there have been some inevitable dents and scratches. DHP is a reputable manufacturer, though, so in case of missing or damaged parts they do offer to ship replacements free of charge.
The ladder is usually mentioned in negative context, with many users finding it uncomfortable to use. Unsurprisingly. As mentioned, padding is often suggested as a remedy. One user was not sold on the pool noodles, though, saying they are too big and couldn’t be fastened with zip ties, suggesting to use pipe insulation instead. Another one went so far to engineer wooden steps and attach them to the rungs, but I have a feeling most of you reading this would be disinclined to go as far. Perhaps this humorous remark from one of the buyers describes the situation best:
The ladder moonlights as a Medieval-like torture device.
Ease of assembly: some users have found the assembly process to be time-consuming and somewhat difficult. Pretty much everyone agrees it requires more than one person to do it.
Bottom Line
Uncomfortable ladder and assembly challenges notwithstanding, the DHP Tommy Twin Metal Loft Bed still seems like a solid choice for those looking to save space or to afford their kid(s) a loft bed experience.
