Introduction

The Maxwell Full Metal Loft Bed With Desk by Novogratz sports a sleek, no-frills modern design with an industrial touch.

The bed is 72 inches (6 feet) high, which is almost a standard for this sort of loft beds. This is pretty high, though. For comparison, an average bunk bed is about 65 to 68 inches tall. The point is, the bed will not fit in a room with a low ceiling. At least 8 feet is required. A 9 foot ceiling would be even better, as that would be in compliance with the recommendation that says there should be at least 3 feet of free space between the top of the bed and the ceiling. With no fans in the vicinity, of course.

That said, this does depend on who is going to use the bed; a child or a person of lower height would probably be able to sit up just fine on this bed in an 8 foot ceiling room, but for a taller person it might get a little claustrophobic up there. Or bumpy.

The vertical space beneath the bed is specified at 58 inches here. Most kids and some adults would be able to walk in there standing straight. The inclusion of a desk limits the ability to fill up all that volume any way you might like, but a smaller dresser or a lounger would probably fit. The desk surface is full-length, 15.5 inches deep and made of wood. 15 inches is a solid depth, although it eludes me why they didn’t make it a bit deeper. This is a full size bed after all, there is plenty of space.

There are two triangle-shaped shelves in the left corner, which can be used to store study supplies or add some funky accessories.

The guardrail height is specified at 12 inches. It’s a decent enough guardrail, could be a little higher, but it’ll do just fine if you stick with a 6 inch mattress that is recommended by the manufacturer.

The weight capacity for this bed is specified at 300 pounds. This is pretty standard for a full size metal loft bed and will accommodate any tween or teen or a young adult, even if they are a bit on the plus size.

The ladder here is straight and built into the footboard. Or headboard, depends on how you look at it. The advantage of such a built-in ladder is, it doesn’t take up any room space. The disadvantage is, it can be more challenging to climb. Also, those rungs look pretty thin and not very comfortable. As is, with some rare exceptions, common for metal loft beds. Some padding might need to be applied (such as pipe isolation) to reduce the problem.

The Maxwell full metal loft bed is available in 3 finishes: white, navy and gray.

What Users Say

If I were to judge by the amount of ratings this loft bed has accrued, then I’d have to say this is one very popular loft bed. At the time of this writing it had well over 2700 ratings on Amazon, with the average of 4.4 stars (although it appears that includes bunk beds from the same line as well). At Wayfair, the bed had well over 1000 ratings, averaging at 4.2 stars.

The Pros

Quality Of Build: The majority of buyers seem to be content with the build quality of this bed. As one reviewer put it: ‘Very sturdy, I was nervous when I read the mixed reviews on this, but I am very pleased.’ Such praise does on occasion come with a bit of a caveat, though. A good example is this assessment by another reviewer: ‘The bed wobbles slightly when you shake it but over all pretty sturdy.’

Ease Of Assembly: Most buyers agree the bed is fairly easy to assemble. There might be an occasional dissenting voice, but you’d have to really search for it.

The Cons

There’s quite a bit of talk of wobbliness. While I have yet to come across a loft bed that doesn’t have at least a few complaints of that nature, there might be a bit more of it than is usual with this bed. Some users even called it ‘extremely wobbly’ which, frankly, is a little hard to believe; the bed certainly wouldn’t have gathered so many 5 star ratings if it were that unsteady. But then, we all have our own perceptions and notions of what is or isn’t ‘extreme.’

Noisiness is another fairly frequent complaint. As one buyer put it: ‘Squeaks every time my eleven year old son moves.’

I have also come across a few objections about welding quality. They are not very common, but usually come backed up by some pictures. Which don’t look good, of course.

Bottom Line

The reviews are a bit mixed on the Maxwell loft bed, and it’s understandable if you’re a little wary of getting it. That said, full metal loft beds with desk are not that common out there. The competition is not very broad, especially in this price range. So this might actually be one of the better options.
