Introduction

The Walker Edison Sunset Twin Over Workstation Metal Loft Bed (now there’s a mouthful) features a design that might be considered a style mark of WE loft beds: a clean-lined metal frame with two ladders, one at the headboard and one at the footboard. Round tubing here, nothing fancy. The bed is branded Milie at Wayfair and Timothee on Amazon; why everyone has to invent their own names for these products is beyond me.

Anyhow, some basic information. The bed is just over 71 inches tall, so about the standard for this type of bed or thereabouts. The under bed clearance is specced at 57 inches, also a pretty customary figure, give or take an inch.

The guardrail height is specified at 14 inches and the manufacturer recommends not to use a mattress thicker than 9 inches. That’s just about in compliance with the regulations which say there must be at least 5 inches of space between the top of the mattress and the top of the guardrail. That said, an 8 inch mattress is as thick as I’d go with this bed. Just to be on the safe side.

The guardrail, as you may have noticed, is continuous all around, there is no opening(s) for easier access to the bed. Some younger kids might struggle with it, but then, looking at the manufacturer’s marketing blurb it seems this bed is geared more toward tweens and teens and college students.

Two vertical ladders here, both featuring the same thin rungs. No matter which side you access the bed from, your feet will hurt the same. This should be the bed’s motto. Unless of course you wear slippers to bed. Or if you have really thick insensitive soles. Or if you’ve been smart and used some padding. Pool noodles are usually recommended, but some pipe insulation might do the job even better.

The included desk is pretty large, almost 19 inches deep and spanning the entire length of the bed. A keyboard tray is a natural and almost necessary addendum, and two small shelves will hold some oft used knick knacks. All together, I’d say this makes for a pretty good gaming setup.

The Sunset twin metal loft bed supports up to 250 pounds of weight. That’s slightly more than is usual for metal loft beds but, as I said, this one is intended for a bit older crowd.

Three finishes are available: black, white, silver. Standard stuff, really.

What Users Say

At the time of this writing the Sunset loft bed has accrued almost 2400 ratings on Amazon, with an average rating of 4.3 stars. At Wayfair, there were close to 3000 ratings with the average of 4.5 stars. So, it’s safe to say we have a highly popular item here with very good ratings.

The Pros

The bed is praised mostly for its sturdy construction and its clean-cut space saving design. Many users appreciate the combination of a loft bed with a built-in desk and bookcase, making it a perfect study nook. Or a gaming lair. Pick your favorite.

The assembly process is generally considered manageable and straightforward, if a little time consuming. Certain parts of the procedure definitely require two persons, though; it’s good to have that in mind.

The Cons

There is quite a bit of talk of wobbliness. Perhaps a bit too much for comfort. However, do note that this bed comes in two versions: with and without a desk. And reviews for both versions are all mashed together. Why am I telling you this? Well, because the version with included desk reviewed here is likely to be more stable, due to more binding points. That said, many reviewers actually pointed out that the wobbling was not very noticeable, certainly not enough to make them doubt the bed’s sturdiness or worry about their kids sleeping up there.

The ladder rungs are catching a lot of slack for being very uncomfortable on the feet. Probably deservedly so, as they do look quite thin. In fact, the whole vertical ladder plus full-length guardrails combination gets plenty of disapproval, as it can make it hard for younger kids to access the bed. And harder even to descend.

Bottom Line

Possibly the most oft-repeated phrase about this bed that I had seen while browsing the reviews is this one: great value for the price. And I think it describes this bed well. While not perfect, it’ll perform its function and will look good doing it, all for a pretty decent price.
