Introduction

DHP’s Abode Twin Metal Loft Bed (branded Larrick at Wayfair) sports a cool, sleek metal look with a desk built into the headboard. The desk is not particularly big, since it spans the width of the bed rather than the length. At 16 inches, it is not very deep either. Still, with two triangle-shaped storage shelves and a little pinboard to the left, I think this combination makes for a rather nice homework nook.

Here’s how that looks up close:

Some basic facts. The bed is a standard 72 inches high. ‘Standard’ for a loft bed, mind you, bunk beds usually come a few inches lower than that. What I’m trying to say is, the bed is pretty high, so, prior to hitting the ‘Buy’ button, make sure your room has a high enough ceiling. It is recommended that at least 3 feet of space is left between the top of the bed and the ceiling. For this particular bed that would mean you need a 9-foot ceiling, however: I’ve seen some buyers say they put a bed of similar height in an 8-foot ceiling room and the kids can sit up just fine. But it’s something to consider.

The vertical space under the bed is an excellent 58.5 inches, but that comes at the expense of the guardrail height, which is specified at only 11.5 inches. Which means you can use a mattress up to 6 inches thick and no more. While not the tallest, the guardrail does at least feature two openings for easier access to the bed. Also, a thinner mattress puts the bed occupant further away from the ceiling.

Which brings us to ladders. There are two of them here, in a rather unique combination: one at the footboard, one at the side. The rungs are flat and reasonably wide, so climbing should be relatively comfortable. For a change. No anti-slip measures, but I guess that’d be too much to hope for. Some grip mat strips should help.

The Abode loft bed has a weight limit of 200 lbs, which seems to be a sort of standard for twin metal loft beds. The desk can take 50 lbs.

Two finishes are available: black and silver.

What Users Say

DHP’s Abode Twin Metal Loft Bed seems to be very popular, with more than 2000 ratings at Wayfair and close to 1800 on Amazon. The average rating on both sites is 4.5 stars.

The Pros

Build Quality: Users for the most part seem to be happy with the construction and overall quality of the product. Words and phrases such as ‘very sturdy,’ ‘good quality,’ ‘well made,’ ‘great bed,’ ‘fantastic bed,’ ‘amazing bed’ are frequently used to describe it. One reviewer claimed the bed was way sturdier than other metal loft beds they had purchased and went on to affirm that it doesn’t squeak. Another reviewer stated she was able to climb up to lay with her 7 year old and the bed did not feel unsafe. She added that her 185 lbs husband was able to hang and do pull ups from the side rail and the bed did not sag or bow at all.

Space Saving: That’s one area pretty much everyone agrees on: this bed is a great space saver. It is especially great in smaller rooms, so that the kids still have a place to hang out. The desk area is said to be ample enough for doing homework or gaming.

Ease Of Assembly: That’s another thing the vast majority of reviewers agrees on: the bed was easy to assemble. Dissenting voices are very few. As one user put it: ‘Super easy to put together, everything was labeled and easy to find.’ Plenty of users reported they finished the job in one hour.

Design: The bed is being called anything from pretty to beautiful. Or, as one mom put it: ‘The coolest addition to the twins bedroom.’

The Cons

Many buyers actually report the bed shakes and wobbles, but few say ‘a lot’ and give it a bad rating for it. ‘Shakes a little if an adult goes on,’ as one reviewer put it and immediately added: ‘Overall good buy, good price.’ Another wrote they anchored the bed to the wall because it was a ‘tad wobbly’, but despite of that proclaimed it a perfect big boy bed to give her son extra space.

I’ve seen a few complaints regarding the guardrail height. It’s a legitimate criticism, I’d say, because it prevents you to use a thick comfortable mattress. Then again, that may not be an option anyway, depending on how high your ceiling is.

Speaking of which… Not really a con, but I it’s worth mentioning. Many users noted that the bed is taller than they thought even though they were aware of the measurements. It just seems bigger in person. Something to have in mind. 72 inches is 6 feet. With lower ceilings it’ll be cramped up there.

Bottom Line

By most accounts this seems to be a good and sturdy enough loft bed that is capable of doing well what its primary purpose is: provide a sleeping area while freeing up space underneath for other activities. I think it deserves a serious look.
