Introduction

DHP Tommy full metal loft bed (branded Ajay at Wayfair) features a modern industrial design with soft, rounded lines that can work well in both a traditional and contemporary room.

At 72.5 inches, the bed is pretty high. There is a general recommendation that there should be at least 3 feet of space between the top of the loft (or bunk) bed and the ceiling, which in this case would mean a 9 foot ceiling. Some, however, interpret this recommendation to mean 3 feet between the top of the mattress and the ceiling, which is a different thing. In any case, I’ve seen plenty of users report they’ve put a loft bed of similar height in an 8 foot ceiling and the kids can sit up just fine.

Such a tall bed does come with an attractive benefit, though: plenty of vertical under bed space. In this case, the specs say 59 inches, to be exact. An average-height adult would just have to bend the head a little when stepping underneath. Most kids wouldn’t even have to do that. Now, combine that with the fact that this is a full size bed and you get a huge volume of space underneath that can be utilized in a myriad of ways: add a desk to create a study area, a dresser for storage or a bed for additional sleeping space. Or a combination of these things. Imagination is the only limit here.

The guardrail height is specified at 12 inches. This is, you know, okay. There are certainly loft beds with taller guardrails, but there are also those with lower ones. The manufacturer recommends to use a standard full size mattress up to 6 inches thick. This is a sound recommendation. It leaves you with 6 inches of free guardrail space to prevent roll-offs, plenty enough to be in compliance with the safety regulations.

DHP Tommy Full Metal Loft Bed - dimensions.

The weight capacity for this bed is specced at 300 pounds. This is about an average for a full size metal loft bed and will accommodate any tween or teen or a young adult, even if they are a bit on the plus size.

The ladder is straight and vertically placed. The rungs look pretty thin and uncomfortable, a common shortcoming of metal loft beds and bunk beds. Users often apply some padding (such as pool noodles) to them to alleviate the issue.

Three finishes are available for this bed: black, white and silver. Note that the price of the product may depend on the finish, and the differences can be significant, so… Just something to have in mind.

What Users Say

This is a very popular loft bed. At the time of this writing it was not far from reaching 3000 ratings on Amazon with the average of 4.3 stars. On Wayfair it had close to 1200 ratings, averaging also at 4.3 stars. These are, I’d say, decent ratings. Not spectacular, but pretty good.

The Pros

Quality Of Build: Reports are a bit mixed on this, but I’d say the majority of buyers feel the bed is of good quality. Expressions such as: sturdy, doesn’t make noises; awesome product; very nice quality; great and sturdy; strong and sturdy; excellent quality — are frequently used to convey the users’ satisfaction with the product.

Ease Of Assembly: Most buyers agree the bed is not very difficult to put together, although opinions on that do range from ‘it’s fairly easy to assemble’ to ‘the instructions were the easiest I’ve ever dealt with.’

The Cons

As I wrote, reports on build quality are a bit mixed. Quite a few buyers feel the bed is not stable enough. Here are some expressions used to describe the issue: very squeaky and wobbly; extremely loose; very wobbly and makes a lot of noise. Or, as one reviewer put it: ‘Never in my life had I had such a creaky bed.’

Even some buyers who were generally happy with the product and gave it five stars, reported that they resorted to fastening the bed to a wall to alleviate this issue.

On a lighter and more interesting note, one user reported a downside that she implied was pertinent specifically to adults. Quote: ‘Obviously you shouldn’t have two people in the bunk. You would probably bend or break the slats and I think any activity would make the whole frame wobbly.’

Now, just what activity does that person have in mind that requires two people? 😊

Moving on. There are some reports of dents, scratches and such. This is standard stuff, really. I’m not trying to make light of it, but it does happen with pretty much any bunk or loft bed out there. Good news is, DHP is a reputable manufacturer and in case of any such issue they offer to ship replacements free of charge.

Finally, there is the ladder. It is mentioned by users as often if not more so than wobbliness. Not in a positive context, of course. Those rungs are pretty uncomfortable and that has to be clear to anyone who has cast one look at them. Fortunately the issue can be alleviated relatively easily and inexpensively by applying some cushioning. Cheap pipe insulation will do just fine.

Bottom Line

Despite the uncomfortable ladder and some reported stability issues, the DHP Tommy Full Metal Loft Bed seems like a solid (and affordable) choice for those looking to open up some space in their rooms, or to afford their kid(s) the precious loft bed experience.
