Introduction
Twin over full bunk beds, for some reason, are rare in the low height configuration, so Hillsdale’s Capri here deserves a special consideration just for existing. That, and the lovely shiplap design which is quite rare to see as well.
The Capri bunk bed is made of wood, and that is all the information I’ve been able to dig about it. One of the retailers would have you believe it is manufactured wood, but that seems unlikely: to me, at least the posts and rails look like they are made of solid wood. A different product from the same manufacturer has the wood type specified as radiata pine, so perhaps there is a clue there. Don’t take it as fact, though.
The Capri twin over full, as you can see in the image below, is 52.5 inches high. Usually low bunk beds are about 50 inches tall, so here we have a 2.5 inch surplus, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It means there is that much more space available on the lower bunk. By the way, the bottom of top bunk to floor dimension is specified at 35 inches. Add the recommended 8 inch mattress and you’re left with 27 inches of space, which is comparable to what you get on a regular height bunk bed. Bottom line, it should be pretty comfortable on the bottom bunk.

The guardrail height is specified at 16 inches (the information originates from a retailer’s website). This is as good as guardrails get, if accurate. With a recommended 8 inch mattress in place you are left with the same 8 inches between the top of the guardrail and the top of the mattress, which far exceeds the required 5 inches.
The ladder on this bunk bed is angled and features four wide rungs for an easy and comfortable access to the top bunk. It hooks to the side rail with metal fasteners. Hard to tell from the images if the rungs are grooved. It would be a perfect ladder if they were.
The weight limit for the top bunk is specified at 350 lbs. Some retailer’s websites say 250, but on the manufacturer’s website it says 350, which is a respectable figure. Shows the manufacturer has confidence in its product. There are 13 mattress slats per bed that make this possible, however there is a bit of a dilemma as to how they are mounted.
If you take a look at the image below, you’ll notice the mattress slats are placed vertically, thinner edge up. The advantage of such a setup is, the slats will take more load, but on the other hand it might not play well with certain types of mattresses.
However, the next image, which is taken from the assembly manual, shows the bed with a slat roll, and the slats are placed in the more common horizontal position. I’m not sure what the deal here is, possibly one of these images is outdated. In any case, the bed should take up to 350 lbs of load, if it says so in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Note: images taken by users and available in the retailers’ comments sections all show the slats in the horizontal position (as seen above). The latest such picture available was taken in December 2023.
The Hillsdale Capri low bunk bed is available in gray and white finishes.
This low height twin over full bunk bed can actually be separated into two individual beds. It doesn’t make for a very symmetrical appearance, but it’ll serve the purpose. The upper, twin size bed, is pictured without the guardrails here. With the guardrails on, it might make a nice toddler bed.

What Users Say About Capri Low Bunk Bed
At the time of this writing the number of ratings for this bunk bed across various shopping sites was rather scarce, but there was still enough to reach some conclusions. The average rating came out to about 4.3 stars.
Quality Of Build: Users who rated the bed highly were generally very happy with the sturdiness and the overall quality of this bunk bed. However, there are some reports of visible defects, such as dents and surface cracks and yellowish patches in the white paint. And, speaking of paint, a few users reported a strong new-paint smell lasting for days.
Ease Of Assembly: Some mixed reports here as well. While some users had a totally smooth experience putting this bed together, others did report some hiccups along the way. Such as missing pieces, holes that aren’t fully drilled and some other small quality control weak spots.
Design: Pretty much everyone loves the way the bunk bed looks. Not much in the way of dissenting opinions on that.
Bottom Line
Hillsdale Capri is a pretty looking low bunk bed with predominantly good ratings. Plus, if this is the exact type of bunk bed you need, there really isn’t much competition out there.
