Introduction
You can tell just by looking at the Levi Twin Over Twin Heavy Duty Bunk (branded Malave at Wayfair) that its name was not chosen for naught: the robust frame, the hefty side rails, the bulky headboard and footboard slats all contribute to the bed’s overall impression of strength and stoutness.
The bed is made of solid pine wood, but I was unable to find more info on its origin other than it had been kiln-dried, which is a popular method these days of drying wood for use in the manufacture of furniture.
The ladder on this bunk bed is straight, clipped on, and does not appear to be reversible, meaning it can only be attached to one side of the bed.
The height of the guardrail on the top bunk is specced at 11.8 inches. The maximum recommended mattress thickness according to one retailer’s website is 8 inches — but according to the product’s documentation it is 6 inches. The latter makes more sense, as the use of an 8 inch mattress with a guardrail of this height would have violated the safety regulations. Not to mention that you should always rely on the official documentation and take everything else with a pinch of salt.
The weight capacity is specified at 300 lbs. This is another figure I picked up from the assembly manual. On some websites you’ll find different figures, usually 400 lbs, I’ve even seen 800 lbs, but 300 is the official number. And it makes sense, given the bed features only 7 slats.

The Levi bunk bed comes in three finishes: espresso (pictured in the main image above), black and white.
The bunk bed can be separated into two individual beds as seen below. Note: to achieve this exact look you will need to disassemble the bed because the top bunk has both footboards and the bottom bunk has both headboards.

What Users Say About Levi Twin Bunk Bed
Out of more than 400 ratings on this bunk bed at Wayfair.com (at the time of this writing), nearly three quarters were five star reviews. The average rating is 4.6 stars. On Amazon there are fewer reviews and the rating as well is a less impressive 3.8 stars.
The Pros
The bed gets quite a lot of praise for sturdiness and build quality. Well built, very very sturdy, super heavy and great quality, very strong wood — those are a few phrases used to describe it. One buyer could not believe the bed didn’t cost at least twice as much. Another warned that this is not a light weight set and that it took a few hours to put together, but that it was totally worth the time.
The Levi solid wood bunk bed did not seem to give people any difficulty assembling it. The parts come labeled with small number stickers, which reportedly helps a lot.
The Cons
Some buyers are complaining about broken parts after some use. To be exact, out of (at the time of this writing) 9 one-star ratings with reviews on Amazon 6 were given due to some breakage that had occurred after a few months. That’s out of the total of 86 ratings so… I’m not liking the percentage here, to be honest.
There are also some complaints about dents and dings, boards being cracked, wrong parts sent or parts mislabeled. But that’s, you know, the usual.
One user would have preferred an angled ladder, unsure how her boys would cope with the straight one. Another wished for a reversible ladder, so that the entry to the top bunk was at the other end of the bed.
There are a few complaints about mattress slats. They are not finished, a common thing among bunk beds in this price range. Also, a few users feel there is not enough of them.
Note that the manufacturer does state that the seven solid pine slats per bed that are included with the purchase are only intended to support a regular spring coil mattress. For a full foam mattress a bunkie board is needed.
Bottom Line
The Levi Twin Over Twin Heavy Duty Bunk Bed has a lot going for it, especially considering the price. I’d say if they made the upper bunk guardrail a couple of inches taller and doubled the amount of support slats it would be darned near perfect. In theory. In practice, there seems to be some problems with quality assurance. Still, if you like the look of it and don’t mind taking a bit of a gamble (and isn’t that the case with any bunk bed purchased online?) you might end up with exactly the bed you were searching for.
