Introduction
This is a twin over full version of the Powell Heavy Duty Metal Bunk Bed (branded as Malakai at Wayfair). The main review can be found here
so in this post I’ll just state the basics and point at some differences.
The Heavy Duty line of bunk beds features an all-tubular design and this looks especially striking with twin over full version. Just look at those powerful 3-inch steel tubes curve their way from top to bottom. Magnificent. Pretty much everything else is made of steel tubes as well, except for the 4 side rails.
One major difference between this bed and the twin/twin and full/full versions is, it cannot be separated into two individual beds. And you can glean as much from the images, those heavy gauge tubes are clearly made out of one piece. In fact, both panels (bed ends), left and right, come already assembled. Welded, actually. The same is true for bed frames. While this makes some parts pretty heavy, the upside is, the assembly is really easy. The package comes with a total of just nine parts plus some screws, nuts, bolts and washers. That’s it. Not a lot of ways to go wrong with this one.
The guardrail height is specced at 14 inches, the same as twin/twin and full/full configurations. The big difference is, however, here the guardrail does not cover the full length of the bed (on one side), there’s an opening to allow for easier access to the top bunk. That was one of the complaints the buyers had for the twin/twin and full/full configurations and I guess the manufacturer paid attention.
Unfortunately the ladder is still made of the same thin steel tubes that so many buyers are finding fault in, claiming they’re painful on the feet. The difference is, the ladder does not stick out here and there are only 3 rungs. Which might make it a bit more difficult to climb, actually.
Powell Twin Over Full Heavy Duty Metal Bunk Bed is also available in 3 finishes: white, black and pewter. You can check out the white version at the top of the page, the black and pewter below.
Finally, here’s all the measurements you need to be familiar with. But, with another bit of a disclaimer: some of these appear to be inaccurate. In particular, the distance between the top and bottom bunk — the 48” and 46.5” measurements — can’t be right. That distance is no more than 35 inches.
