Introduction
Simplicity meets elegance, this is how DHP’s Dusty Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed could be described in just three words. The uncomplicated, yet stylish metal frame, the smooth curved lines and the five fun colors all come together to give this bed a fresh, modern appearance that would not look out of place anywhere.
The bed is 61.5 inches high, which is within what is considered normal for bunk beds of this type, although a bit on the lower side. The mattress foundation for the top bunk lies 49 inches high. Add a 6 inch mattress and you’re at 55 inches, which is well below 5 feet, which means this bunk bed will fit very comfortably in an 8 foot ceiling room. Possibly you could get away with it in a 7 foot ceiling room as well, although it could get a little cramped up there for a taller person.
There is a reasonable 10.5 inch clearance below the bottom bunk for storage bins or containers that can hold toys, clothing, shoes or whatever.
The space between the two bunks is specified at 35.5 inches, a plentiful amount allowing for a comfortable existence on the bottom bunk even with an 8 inch mattress in place.

The guardrail height is specced at 12 inches. This is closer to the lower end of the scale for a twin size bunk bed, but it’s enough to accommodate the recommended 6 inch mattress and stay plenty within the established safety regulations. With an inch to spare.
The weight limit for the Dusty twin metal bunk bed is specified at 200 lbs for the top bunk and 250 lbs for the lower bunk. This discrepancy might raise a few eyebrows, seeing how both bunks use seemingly identical mattress support consisting of 22 metal slats spaced 2.5 inches apart. It does make sense, though, certifying the upper bunk to a lower amount, considering that the risk of injury in case of a breakage is much higher on the upper bunk.
Note: on some retailers’ websites you might find a link to this bed’s owner manual in which the weight limit is specified at 150 lbs for both bunks. I believe this to be an outdated document. In the current user manual found on the manufacturer’s website the correct weight limits are stated.
And, we’ve arrived to the ladder. As is the case with the majority of metal bunk beds, the ladder is made of tubular steel which is of rather low profile (read: thin) and as such not very comfortable on the feet. But, as I said, this a common ailment of the majority of metal made elevated beds. The remedy is to cover the rungs with some sort of cushioning. Pool noodles and pipe insulation are popular choices, and there are also bunk bed ladder pads made specifically for that purpose.
The ladder is angled and sticks out a bit; 18.5 inches, to be precise. In comparison to a vertical clipped-on ladder, the angled one is easier to climb, but at the expense of being a little in the way. Both approaches have their advantages and their drawbacks.
DHP Dusty Twin Metal Bunk Bed is available in 5 finishes: black, white, gray, pink and navy. You can find them all on this page except for the navy one, which I have not been able to source.
What Users Say
Up to the time of this writing I have come across close to 25 000 ratings on this metal bunk bed throughout various shopping sites. The average rating depends on the site, but is usually around 4.4 or 4.5 stars. Close to 70% of reviewers gave this bed the maximum 5 stars.
The Pros
Users frequently praise the bed’s solid metal construction, referring to it as sturdy, stable, solid, durable. I did notice there is sometimes, how should I put it, a bit of reserve in some of these reviews, as if the pricing point is calculated into the feedback. As in, the bed is great for the price, is sturdy enough considering how much we paid for it, will probably last as long as we need it to last etc. Which, I guess, is fair enough.
The sleek contemporary design of the Dusty Twin Bunk Bed does not go unnoticed. Many buyers call it downright beautiful, and I’ve seen it mentioned a few times how it looks even better in person than on the screen.
Reviewers often highlight the straightforward assembly process. The bed reportedly comes with clear instructions and all the necessary tools.
The Cons
Some users have reported issues with damaged parts upon delivery. While these instances appear to be relatively rare, that’s of little consolation if it happens to you. That said, DHP is a reputable company and has reportedly been responsive in providing replacement parts.
Another oft reported issue users have is, you guessed it, with the ladder. Those thin rungs can be uncomfortable on the feet and may require some measures to be taken.
Note: there are several different configurations of the DHP Dusty bunk bed. Apart from the twin version there is a twin over full version, twin over futon version and full over futon version. Why am I telling you this? Well, on some shopping sites the ratings for all these different configurations are gathered on the same page which is kind of a little unfair, since the majority of one-star ratings these beds receive are intended for the futon configurations. Some buyers feel there is something not quite right with the futon mechanism. But this has nothing to do with the twin over twin version of the bunk bed reviewed here, so I’m mentioning it because seeing those one star reviews might give you a pause and that would be a shame.
Bottom Line
There are tens of thousands of ratings on this bunk bed out there. Need I say more? The DHP Dusty bunk beds sell. And all those people can’t be wrong.
