Introduction

And now for something completely different. Reviewing bunk beds, I am more often than not faced with one and the same design: a bed stacked on top of another bed. There are of course variations in details, but the basic premise is mostly the same. And there is a reason for that: it works. Still, it is a delight to every once in a while bump into something that is refreshing and innovative, such as the Fredonia twin over twin (branded SOFTSEA on Amazon) here.

At 54.5 inches, this bunk bed belongs in the low height category, yet the lower bunk is still raised enough to be able to accommodate three rather roomy drawers underneath. Impressive. Of course, this comes at the expense of the under bed clearance on the lower bunk. Looking at the dimensions in the image below there looks to be about 26, maybe 27 inches of space down there. Add the recommended 6 inch mattress and you’re left with some 20 inches of space, which is hardly a comfortable state of affairs. However, this problem is easily solved by reversing the sleeping position. Turn around so that your head is at the other end of the bed, the one that sticks out. And that’s it. Problem solved. For legs, 20 inches is plenty enough.

Fredonia Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed With Storage Drawers - dimensions.

It is not entirely clear what the guardrail height here is. Some of the retailers have it specced at 15.6 inches, but that doesn’t seem right. The dimension in the image above shows 12 inches from the top of the guardrail to the top of the main side rail. That side rail looks to be (my estimate) about 4 inches thick, and the mattress slats seem to be placed roughly in the center of it. Based on that, the measure between the top of the guardrail and the top of the mattress slats can’t be more than 14 inches.

In any case, the manufacturer recommends the use of up to a 6 inch mattress, which is really the most important information you need.

The ladder on Fredonia bunk bed is vertical and clipped on. There are two rungs only, and they are fitted vertically with the thinner side up, which presumably makes them a touch uncomfortable. That said, I can see how mounting the rungs any other way would sort of not be in line with the overall design of this product, so… Perhaps we have a bit of a form over function situation here.

The weight capacity for both bunks is specified at 300 lbs. That’s a decent figure. There are 14 wooden slats per bed and they offer good support. And they are spaced dense enough so you can use a memory foam mattress if preferred.

You may have noticed this bunk bed packs quite a bit of storage capacity. Six drawers in total, three as part of the chest and three underneath the bed. They seem pretty similar in size, if not exactly identical. At first glance they may look bigger than they actually are, due to those big front-end plates. The actual 5.5 inches of depth still offers lots of storage space, though.

What Users Say

At the time of this writing there were not really enough ratings on this bunk bed to form a proper conclusion. From what little there is available it seems that buyers are liking the bed well enough, but it is a bit of a challenge to put together. I’ll update this page when there is more data out there.
