Introduction

Here we have a twin over twin version of Maxwood Furniture’s Modern Farmhouse line of bunk and loft beds where soft, rounded corners meet distressed finishes to create a rustic but somehow still modern look.

Possibly the first thing that catches the eye with this bunk bed is, there is no ladder here. How is one supposed to get on the top bunk? Certainly there are no stairs. If you look closer at the image below, however, you’ll notice there are grooved side planks attached to the boards and, sure, these certainly can function as a ladder. It might not be a solution that’ll make a mom who was nervous about bunk beds in the first place particularly happy but, on the other hand, I’m of the opinion climbing to the top bunk will not present any kind of problem for the vast majority of kids out there.

Also, it is worth noting that this ‘ladder’ can be mounted on either side of the bed.

The guardrail is 13.5 inches high on the Modern Farmhouse line of bunk beds which means you can equip the top bunk with an 8 inch mattress and still stay within the permitted safety parameters (there has to be a minimum of 5 inches of space between the top of the mattress and the top of the guardrail). The manufacturer recommends the use of a 5 to 7 inch mattress, though, to be on the safe side. It’s always better to have more free guardrail.

The weight capacity for this bunk bed is specified at 400 lbs. This is an above average figure, but standard for Max & Lily bunk beds which employ a centered metal rod as an additional support for the mattress slats. See how that looks below (albeit on the twin/full version of this bunk bed).

The Modern Farmhouse bunk bed is just over 63 inches tall, which is at the lower end of the scale for an average bunk bed, but this is entirely due to the somewhat lesser under bed space which is specced at 7.25 inches. The space between the bottom and top bunk is an excellent 35 inches. That’s without a mattress. With the mattress in place this drops to 30 inches or below, but that’s still plenty enough space for the occupant of the lower bunk.

The finish on this bunk bed is distressed, which means the wooden material was submitted to a decorative procedure designed to give furniture an aged, weathered appearance. The end result is a little rough, barn wood textured feel, such as you might expect in a rustic setting.

I feel this bears repeating as there have been a few buyers who were surprised when they opened the box. So: the finish on this bed is not smooth and the paint can look a little uneven and this is intentional and not because someone did a poor paint job. You can sort of get a feel for it if you look at the images closely. The flush, color-matched hardware completes the look.

Up to three finishes are available: Driftwood (which is sort of gray, but not always), White Wash (which is sort of white) and Barnwood Brown (which is pretty brown).

What Users Say

This bed has gathered a fair amount of reviews across various shopping sites with, at the time of this writing, excellent average ratings.

The Pros

Build Quality: The large majority of reviewers found this bed to be very sturdy and well built. Many pointed out the lack of any squeaking noises. Equally as many claimed the bed is not wobbly at all. Heavy and stable — no movement, as one buyer put it. These claims reportedly hold true even with a heftier adult on board. I’ve even seen a report of this bed being used in a professional capacity (for Airbnb). Plenty of reviewers shared that the bed exceeded their expectations. A buyer chimed in after a year of use to say the bed has held up fantastic.

Design: The reviewers are unanimous here: the bed looks beautiful. And this is being expressed time and again. Super cute and great looking are a couple of other expressions used by users to convey their satisfaction with the bed’s appearance.

Ease Of Assembly: There is pretty much a consensus among buyers that the Modern Farmhouse twin bunk bed is (very) easy to put together. Usually I find at least some dissenting opinions, and perhaps this time I haven’t looked hard enough, or perhaps there is something about these wide planks the bed is made of that makes the process easier.

The Cons

Negative reviews are few. Mostly they have to do with the bed’s stability. For some users the bed apparently wobbles or sways. Such reports are in stark contrast with the majority of enthusiastic accounts about the bed’s sturdiness, so immediately what comes to mind is user error — although that does not necessarily have to be the case. A manufacturing imperfection with their particular specimen could be a reason as well.

There are also some reports of missing pieces and missing screw holes, as well as a complaint about the slats being too far apart.

Bottom Line

If you are on the market for a not too expensive, great looking twin over twin bunk bed of coastal/rustic character, give this one a good look. It’s made by a reputable manufacturer, it is versatile (available with either trundle or under bed drawers), has an excellent weight capacity and has gathered a fair amount of great reviews.
