Introduction

The Columbia Twin Over Full Solid Wood Bunk Bed With Trundle (branded Blaisdell at Wayfair) comes in a little more expensive than your average bunk bed, but that’s probably because it’s made of rubberwood, a type of hardwood that is usually described as eco-friendly because it is produced from trees that have already served a useful function. In the production of rubber, no doubt.

Another thing that contributes to a feeling of quality when it comes to furniture is good joinery. This bed utilizes mortise & tenon joints, where the hardwood rails are connected to the end panels with steel bolts and barrel nuts. Ladders, end panels, and guard rails all feature fortified supports. All together, 26 steel reinforcement points are included.

The two 14-piece slat kits ensure an excellent mattress support for both bunks. The lower bunk gets some additional support in the shape of two centered rods that are each propped up further still by two vertical bars (see image below). Hence the specified weight support on the lower bunk of 600 lbs. The top bunk is specced to bear 400 lbs.

The beds accept up to a 9 inch mattress. The top of the mattress should be at least 5 inches below the upper edge of the guardrails on the top bunk.

The trundle bed is included in price, accommodates an 8 inch twin-size mattress and rolls in and out on wheels.

The ladder is of clip-on variety, meaning it does not reach the floor. A lot of people prefer that as it saves some space and you can’t trip over it. The ladder can be set up on either end of the bed, and four steel connectors make sure it stays in place.

The Columbia twin/full bunk bed is currently available in two colors: walnut and white. I should mention here the highly touted five-step finishing process, which, according to the manufacturer, is supposed to last for generations.

What Users Say About Columbia Twin Over Full Bunk Bed

I went through dozens of reviews for this bunk bed across multiple shopping sites. By and large they are positive. Most of those ratings the product has accrued at Wayfair.com where, at the time of this writing, it had an average rating of 4.8 stars. The overwhelming majority of reviewers gave it five stars.

The Pros

The read is pretty boring and repetitive, to be honest. Quality and sturdiness are the most oft-repeated words. Exceptional high quality material and finish, as one buyer put it. Excellent product, high quality feel, another one reinforced the assertion. The bed is also described as very large and heavy and very well made. Its usefulness in guest rooms is emphasized with an assertion that it easily sleeps 4 people.

Most reviewers agree that the Columbia Twin Over Full Bunk Bed is easy to put together, with the assembly instructions clear and concise and easy to follow.

The pull-out trundle is mentioned to be very practical and rolling away nicely. Even packaging is being praised, with all the pieces said to be wrapped in soft foam sheets, and the boxes reinforced with rigid styrofoam along all edges and around the corners.

The Cons

Disapproving opinions are few. One buyer felt that the steel connectors on the ladder fit too tightly, which resulted in damaging the finish; she suggested putting soft non scratching padding in between. Nonetheless, she gave the bed four stars. One user on Amazon posted a picture of a cracked main rail, which happened after three years of use. Another buyer mentioned they received a brown ladder with a white bunk bed, but the error was quickly remedied. Actually I’ve seen a few such reports of mismatched colors. It happens, and it usually earns the product a one star review. Which is understandable, even though it is the overall buying experience being rated here, not the actual product.

Note that this bunk bed also comes in different configurations (with built-in stairs or underbed storage instead of trundle, for example) and that these other configurations do have some reports on them of cracked wood, scratches, misfitting screws etc. But such reports are quite rare.

Bottom Line

This is not an inexpensive bunk bed, hence the expectations are also higher going in, but I’d say, judging by the available reviews, that the bed manages to meet them just fine. Being made of hardwood it is heavy and sturdy, the mattress support is excellent and it meets all safety standards. Plus it looks great.
