Introduction

The Barnett Twin Over Full Bunk Bed is meant to be used primarily by kids. The weight capacity for the top bunk is 165 lbs, which is somewhat low compared to some other solid wood bunk beds reviewed at this site. In addition, the manufacturer itself states that the top bunk is designed for children ranging from 4 years of age to 12 years. (Hmmm. A general recommendation actually says that children under age 6 should not be allowed on the top bunk.)

The specified distance between the top and bottom bunk of 31 inches also suggests this piece of furniture was not designed for a fully grown person. However. I do have to pause here to wonder if this was measured with or without the mattress on the bottom bunk. My guess would be they had something like a five inch mattress there while doing the measuring. Why do I think so? Well, usually this dimension on most standard-sized bunk beds measures about 35-36 inches (without a mattress), and nothing I see on the Barnett bed including its total height and other dimensions suggest such a cramped situation on the bottom bunk.

The lower bunk is supported by three adjustable vertical rods and is rated at 250 lbs. So, bed time reading should be possible after all, at least on the lower bunk.

The bed is designed to accommodate a mattress without a box spring, however: due to the spacing of the slats on the mattress platform only coil spring mattresses are to be used. For a foam mattress some additional support is needed.

The four step ladder is angled and reaches to the floor, which takes up a bit more space, but might be more stable and safer to climb. It can be fitted to either side of the bed.

It is possible to unstack this bunk bed into two stand-alone beds if the situation calls for it.

The bed is made of spruce, a type of soft, medium-weight wood widely spread in northern parts of Europe. It is available in five colors: graphite blue, black, espresso, white and gray.

What Users Say About Barnett Twin Over Full Bunk Bed

This attractive twin/full bunk bed has amassed, at the time of this writing, a whopping 4500+ ratings on Wayfair.com alone, with the average rating of 4.5 stars. So it seems to be a highly popular bed, and well liked too. Almost 69% of reviewers gave it five stars, but there are some one-star ratings mixed up in there as well.

The Pros

The majority of reviewers mention the build quality of this bunk bed in a favorable way. The prevalent sentiment is that it is well made and safe. ‘Sturdy’ is the word being repeated over and over. And over. And again. (Well, I did mention there were over 4000 ratings, right?) The bed is also depicted as heavy duty, as having a super nice design and made with great quality materials. One user reported it has stood up to ‘quite a few rambunctious sleepovers’ over a year, while another wrote that it still ‘holds up great after over a year, no cracks or breaks.’

As for the ease of assembly, there actually appears to be a (rare) widespread agreement that the Barnett twin over full bunk bed is not at all difficult to put together. Some isolated opinions, of course, are always there.

The Cons

With such a high volume of reports on this bunk bed, there are bound to be some negative opinions as well. A thing mentioned several times is that some of the holes and pins are not well matched, making the assembly difficult. One user reported a broken ladder after one year of use by one child. Another one complained about the slats not fitting correctly. A number of buyers estimated that the mattress slats are too far apart and will need reinforcing. There are also several complaints about scratches and damaged pieces, as well as some paint imperfections.

Bottom Line

We have here is an attractive twin over full bunk bed with thousands of user ratings behind it touting its build quality. People have spoken, so there’s not much to add. The only downside I see is the specified weight capacity for the top bed which is somewhat lower than some of the competition, but that shouldn’t be a problem if the bed is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
