Introduction

This is a variant of the Classic low twin bunk bed by Maxwood Furniture that I reviewed here:

Since I covered all the details in the main review, I’ll just point out some differences here. Which aren’t that many.

The main thing is of course the staircase. Probably no one would argue that stairs are a safer way to get to the top bunk than a ladder. In addition, they provide some storage space. There aren’t any drawers here, as far as I can tell, but the steps are pretty big and there is space in there to be filled with toys, some books perhaps, or even clothing if necessary.

Stairs make the bed bigger, that’s the downside of it. The staircase, together with the bannister, is some 18 inches wide, so the total length of the bed increases to 99.5 inches. If you have a small room, make sure there is enough space in there before pulling the trigger.

On the plus side, you do get back an estimated 12 inches or so in the width department, which is the distance the angled ladder protrudes into the room. Plus it eliminates the possibility of bumping into the ladder or tripping over it.

Another thing worth mentioning is, the staircase version of the bed, at 177 lbs, is much heavier than the regular version which weighs 105 lbs. More weight can be a good thing, it makes the bed more stable, but it will be more difficult to move it when necessary, for example when it’s time to clean the dust that will (inevitably) gather underneath. The bed ships in two boxes, so at least getting it into the house won’t be such a problem.

The Classic low twin bunk bed with stairs is available in five finishes as opposed to seven for the regular bed. Blue and natural are not available, which leaves us with: white, gray, clay, pecan and walnut. The clay finish is depicted in the main image at the top of this page, the rest you can check out below.

A note about the clay finish: it is of distressed variety, which means the surface is a little rough and the coloring slightly uneven.
