Introduction

If you took a look at the basic facts above, one figure might have caught your eye. The Camaflexi Full Over Full Bunk Bed (branded Burkley at Wayfair) is constructed to withstand 1000 lbs of weight on the top bed. It’s not a typo. I did not accidentally add a zero there. This is a specification I found on the manufacturer’s website. And it’s a respectable one. Most bunk beds are specified to withstand 2, 3, 4 times less load.

And the picture below shows why that is the case. The Camaflexi bunk bed features 14 mattress support slats per bunk. Very often, with other bunk beds, there are only 7 of them. Additionally, there are two lengthwise rods supporting the slats. Obviously the manufacturer did not spare the effort to make this bunk bed as robust as can be. Which begs the question, why isn’t each and every bunk bed constructed like this? Costs cutting? Surely the few slats and a couple of rods would not make the product that much more expensive. Or would it?

Anyway, moving on. Another distinctive feature of this bunk bed is its height. At 69.5 inches high, it exceeds your average bunk bed by about 4-5 inches. A taller bunk bed means more head space on the bottom bunk, which is good, especially if it’s going to be used by adults. (And why not, given its robustness.) It does also mean less space on the top bunk, however, which might be important if your ceiling is not very high or there is maybe a ceiling fan to be avoided.

The height of the top bunk guardrail is not specified, or at least I haven’t been able to find that information; however, a loft bed from the same family has the property specified at 16 inches (at one of the retailers) and, since the two products’ top ends are nearly identical, I took the liberty of making an assumption this bunk bed’s guardrail height is identical. If you know for a fact that’s wrong, please do let me know and I’ll make a correction. The maximum recommended mattress thickness is specified, to 9 inches. This is relatively thick for a bunk bed, but with the rail 16 inches high there will still be plenty of space left to prevent a possible roll-off.

The ladder on this bunk bed is of the clip-on variety, does not reach the floor and features four nice and wide rungs. It’s difficult to tell from the available images if the rungs are grooved to facilitate safer climbing, but the manufacturer says they are, so let’s trust that. What you can tell from the pictures is that the ladder can be attached to either side of the bed. So that’s good.

The Camaflexi Full Over Full Bunk Bed can be separated into two individual units as seen in the image below.

To make the beds look exactly like this you’ll have to use the two lower-bunk bed-ends as footboards.

The bed is available in four finishes: gray, cappuccino, natural and white. Note: at the time of this writing the white finish was not available at the manufacturers website, but it was still listed as available at Wayfair.

I have to say, kudos to whoever did the bedding on these. Looks just perfect. And it probably wasn’t easy to do, especially the top bunk. Unless of course this is Photoshop in action.

What Users Say About Camaflexi Full Over Full Bunk Bed

At the time of this writing there was more than 140 ratings on this bunk bed at Wayfair, with the average rating coming in at 4.6 stars. Almost three quarters of the reviewers gave the bed five stars. So, I’m going to go on the limb here and say people seem to like it pretty well. One star reviews you can count on one hand.

The Pros

The bed is described as gorgeous and very beautiful. One user depicted the finish as ‘not overly shiny’ — which looks cheap, in her opinion. The phrases ‘very sturdy’ and ‘super sturdy’ are repeated probably dozens of times in the comments. ‘Great quality’ is another such phrase. The bed is also touted as durable and well made, heavy, and ‘not flimsy.’

A few reviewers chimed in after years of use to report the bed has held up great. One user mentioned they have moved since having this bed so they had to take it apart and put back together again and it went very easily and no issues.

The directions are said to be clear and easy to follow. All parts come numbered and the hardware separated. There are those who disagree but I’d say they are in a decisive minority. Some call the assembly tedious but worth the effort.

Surprisingly I’ve seen only a few reviewers mentioning the high weight capacity. People do not seem to be catching on to it…

Regarding the assembly, one advice that I see pop up over and again is to ditch the included Allen key and use the power tools instead. Apparently there’s a lot of screwing to do and it’ll save you lots of time, plus your thumbs and hands will thank you for it.

The Cons

Negative reviews on this bunk bed are few. One user reported the running board cracked right down the middle when an adult sat on the bed. Another user called the bed ‘not strong,’ alleging that it shakes when her child moves a little on the top bunk. Yet another complained about the bed not being wide enough for the full size mattress. (Don’t know what to think about that one.)

Bottom Line

The Camaflexi full over full seems to be a nice and sturdy bunk bed with plenty of head space on the bottom bunk and the specified top-bed weight capacity that is second to none. The tall guardrail makes it possible to use a more comfortable mattress. It’s made of solid wood, meets all safety standards. Checks all the boxes. You definitely do not want to overlook this one.
