Introduction

DHP’s Dusty Twin Over Full is a rather elementary, yet stylish metal bunk bed featuring a modern all-tube curved-lines design. Available in 6 fun colors, this bed will enliven any more or less contemporary environment.

At 61.5 inches of height the Dusty bunk bed is a trifle lower than an average product in this class, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The space between the bunks is still an excellent 35.5 inches, ensuring there is plenty of headroom on the lower bunk. The under bed clearance is a decent 11 inches and provides a fair amount of storage space if needed.

The plus side of the somewhat lower height is, the bed will fit into a room with somewhat lower ceiling. And, moms (and dads, why not) will have an easier access to the top bunk for sheet changing and tucking the little ones in.

The guardrail height is specified at 13 inches. A decent figure, more than enough to accommodate the recommended 6 inch mattress while staying in compliance with the safety regulations. With two inches to spare, actually. Theoretically, you could use up to an 8 inch mattress and still be within the established safety parameters, but: you should always go for more free guardrail, to be on the safe side.

You may have noticed that there is no opening in the guardrail for easier access to the top bunk; users just have to step over it. It might present a bit of a problem for less dexterous or smaller kids, but, then again, children under 6 years of age are not allowed on the top bunk anyhow.

The weight limit for the Dusty twin over full bunk bed is specified at 200 lbs for the top bunk and 350 lbs for the lower bunk. As is noticeable in the image above, the lower bunk has an additional centered rod supporting the full size slats, hence the much higher load capacity. It makes sense, for a full size bed.

The ladder(s). Two of them here, one on each side of the bed. Vertical, clipped on. Not the easiest to climb, perhaps, at least compared to angled ladders, but at least they don’t take up any floor space. As seen below, they are made of steel tubes of a rather thin gauge, so they will not be very comfortable on the feet. The proposed remedy is to cover the rungs with some sort of cushioning. Pool noodles and pipe insulation are popular choices. There are also bunk bed ladder pads made specifically for that purpose.

What Users Say

Up to the time of this writing I have come across more than 30 000 (?!) ratings on this metal bunk bed throughout various shopping sites. The average rating depends on the site, but is usually around 4.4 or 4.5 stars. Close to 70% of reviewers gave this bed the maximum 5 stars.

The Pros

A huge number of buyers have given the DHP Dusty Twin Over Full Bunk Bed the highest rating for its sturdiness, design, and value for money.

That last point especially gets repeated incessantly. While users do frequently praise the bed’s solid metal construction, I did notice there is sometimes a bit of restraint in some of these reviews, as if the pricing point is calculated into the feedback. As in, the bed is great for the price, is sturdy enough considering how much we paid for it, will probably last as long as we need it to last etc. Fair enough, I guess.

The sleek contemporary design of the Dusty Twin Over Full Bunk Bed gets its fair share of accolades. Most reviewers deem the bed beautiful, and reportedly it looks even better in person than in the pictures.

The assembly process for this bunk bed, by most accounts, is quite straightforward. The bed reportedly comes with clear instructions and all the necessary tools. ‘Easy to build’ is one of the phrases you’ll bump against most often if you delve into the reviews yourself.

The Cons

With such a massive amount of reviews this bed has gathered, it would be weird if some weren’t negative. Mostly these have to do with damaged parts upon delivery. While these occurrences appear to be relatively few, that’s of little consolation if it happens to you. That said, DHP is a reputable company and has reportedly been responsive in providing replacement parts.

Another oft reported issue users have is, you guessed it, with the ladder. Those thin rungs can be uncomfortable on the feet and, as mentioned before, may require some padding.

Note: there are several different configurations of the DHP Dusty bunk bed. Apart from the twin version there is a twin over full version, twin over futon version and full over futon version. Why am I telling you this? Well, on some shopping sites the ratings for all these different configurations are gathered on the same page which is kind of a little unfair, since the majority of one-star ratings these beds receive are intended for the futon configurations. Some buyers feel there is something not quite right with the futon mechanism. But this has nothing to do with the twin over twin version of the bunk bed reviewed here, so I’m mentioning it because seeing those one star reviews might give you a pause and that would be a shame.

Bottom Line

With tens of thousands of 5-star ratings to its name, this bunk bed hasn’t got much left to prove. All those people who bought it can’t be wrong.
