Introduction

Here’s a charming line of farmhouse-style low loft beds where an elevated sleeping space is combined with some storage, a desk, or a secret hideout. Or some combination thereof.

The beds are made of solid New Zealand pine wood which is known for its strength and the ability to retain the shape and smooth surface for years. The metal-on-metal component connections provide structural solidity. Like all bunk and loft beds coming from Maxwood Furniture, these too feature a centered metal rod that supports the mattress slats, ensuring the relatively high static weight capacity of 400 lbs.

The Modern Farmhouse line of low loft beds comes in four finishes: White Wash, which is sort of white; Driftwood, which is sort of gray, but in some pictures also looks a little brownish; Barnwood Brown, which is actually brown; and Farmhouse Pecan, which in some pictures has a bit of an orange hue. (Note: the Pecan color is not available for all beds.) The finish is distressed and brings out the wood grain. This means it’s a little rough, not smooth. It’s good to be aware of that to avoid a possible surprise when you open the box.

The Modern Farmhouse line of loft beds is available in several configurations, from fairly involved arrangements that include both storage and a desk, to a mere bare-bones low loft. Let’s start with the most popular bed.

Modern Farmhouse Low Loft Bed With Two Bookcases

This configuration features two built-in bookcases with four shelves for arranging the favorite toys and books. In between, there is a sort of staircase. To the side (built into the footboard, in this case), there is an entrance to a playroom underneath the bed. Alternatively, the space can be used for storing larger items. The entrance can go to either side of the bed. Note the height of the loft: a mere 41.5 inches. The top of an 8 inch mattress would sit at about 35 inches.

The height of the guardrail preventing the sleeper to roll off the bed is the above-average 15 inches with this configuration. The manufacturer recommends not to use a mattress thicker than 8 inches, to stay comfortably within the safety regulations.

  • Dimensions: 76.5” L x 47” W x 41.5” H
  • Guardrail height: 15”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 8”
  • Under bed space: 75” L x 31.5” W x 27.5” H
  • Playroom door height: ~ 22-23”

Modern Farmhouse Low Loft Bed With Bookcases & Drawers

Modern Farmhouse Twin Low Loft Bed With Bookcases And Drawers in Driftwood finish.

A similar concept here, except there is no playroom entrance. Although you (well, your kids) can still crawl in there from behind I guess. If the bed is not placed flush against the wall. Two big drawers here, plus bookshelves. Couldn’t tell you what the actual measures of the drawers are; in the Q&A section on manufacturer’s site they provided the dimensions which I did (reluctantly) list here, but these clearly can’t be accurate. The ‘8.5” W’ measurement probably refers to the depth and it’s very clear from the image below the drawers are way deeper than that.

  • Dimensions: 76.5” L x 47” W x 41.5” H
  • Drawer dimensions: 29.25” L x 8.5” W (??) x 10” H
  • Guardrail height: 15”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 8”

Modern Farmhouse Play & Store Low Loft Bed

Another variation to the theme here. The playroom entrance is moved to the side. There is still room left for one big drawer and a bookcase. No steps here; rather, there is a ladder at the foot of the bed featuring three wide grooved rungs for safe and comfortable access to the bed.

  • Dimensions: 84.25” L x 42.5” W x 41.5” H
  • Playroom door height: ~ 23”
  • Guardrail height: 15”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 8”

Modern Farmhouse Twin Low Loft Bed

Modern Farmhouse Twin Size Low Loft Bed in Driftwood finish.

This is the bare-bones Modern Farmhouse low loft. Although from the same family, this bed is a little different than the ones featured above. Starting with dimensions: it is 48.25 inches tall, almost 7 inches taller, sporting that much more clearance under the bed. Width and length are thereabouts. The guardrail height here is somewhat lower, though: 13.5 inches. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends the maximum mattress thickness not to exceed 7 inches. One more thing, this version only comes in 3 finishes. Farmhouse Pecan is not available for the time being.

Also, you are probably scratching your head right now, wondering: where is the friggin’ ladder? Stairs? Anything? Yeah, I was confused too. I honestly thought they forgot to bring the ladder in for the session or something. But, no. If you look closely at the footboard side above, you’ll notice two grooved slats fastened to those transversal planks with what looks like 3 screws each. Yep, those are ladder rungs and that’s the ladder. Might not be the most comfortable one, but I’m sure it works. And it is very farmhouse-y.

  • Dimensions: 78.25” L x 43.5” W x 48.25” H
  • Clearance under the bed: 33.25”
  • Guardrail height: 13.5”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 7”

Modern Farmhouse Twin Low Loft Bed With Desk

Modern Farmhouse Twin Low Loft Bed With Desk in Barnwood Brown finish.

Here we have the same bed as above, but with a desk hooked to the bed. Yes, the desk literally hooks to the bed. It can then be tucked in again when not needed, I guess by hooking it up to the side rail on the other side. In the Q&A on the manufacturer’s site they say the desk rolls in, but I don’t see any casters here. The dimensions of the desk are from a retailer’s website and I can’t vouch for their accuracy, but they should be thereabouts.

  • Dimensions: 78.25” L x 74” W x 48.25” H
  • Desk dimensions: 31.5” W x 15.75” D
  • Guardrail height: 13.5”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 7”

Modern Farmhouse Twin Low Loft Bed With Desk And Storage

Still the same bed, only a bit more involved. It comes with a decent amount of storage: a 3-drawer dresser and a 2-shelf bookcase. The fronts of the drawers are made of solid pine wood, the sides of engineered wood. If necessary the dresser and/or the bookcase can be removed and placed elsewhere.

The desk can be attached to either side of the bed, the storage units just need to be moved over.

  • Dimensions: 78.25” L x 74” W x 48.25” H
  • Drawer dimensions: 24” L x 12.5” W x 4” H
  • Desk dimensions: 31.5” W x 15.75” D
  • Guardrail height: 13.5”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 7”

Finally, if you have no interest in the desk, here’s an all-storage configuration of this same bed with a 3-drawer dresser and a 4-shelf bookcase.

  • Dimensions: 78.25” L x 43.5” W x 48.25” H
  • Drawer dimensions: 24” L x 12.5” W x 4” H
  • Guardrail height: 13.5”
  • Maximum recommended mattress thickness: 7”

What Users Say

There are hundreds of reviews on this line of loft beds across different shopping sites. The lowest average rating I’ve seen is 4.7 stars at Wayfair. One star ratings, so far, I’ve counted 2. In words, two. So I won’t be exaggerating at all if I say people just love this low loft bed.

The Pros

In the words of a buyer:

This is the bed I dreamed of when I was a kid.

There is an almost unanimous agreement among the buyers that Modern Farmhouse low loft beds feel very solid and sturdy. The phrases ‘amazing quality’ and ‘fantastic quality’ are used repeatedly. One user exalted that she had two kids up on the bed and it didn’t move.

The little hideaway under the bed is definitely a hit. (Was there even any doubt?) Kids invariably love it, and are turning it into a ‘fort’ or their very own private ‘office.’

The bookshelves get some praise as well, are said to hold a lot.

The assembly procedure is described as pretty straight-forward. Some call the assembly instructions excellent, others feel they could be better if some actual descriptions were added to the pictures.

The Cons

Negative opinions are rare. Of the two one-star reviews I’ve seen one is about delayed delivery and the other, well, it’s not really clear from the review what exactly was it that bothered that reviewer.

There are a few complaints about the steps, it seems some of the smaller kids are having a bit of trouble climbing up. The issue seems to be that the second step is too close to the top of the bed. And it is pretty close, but… maybe it just takes some practice.

As usual when it comes to Modern Farmhouse line of products, there is some dissatisfaction with the finish, from users who expected a smooth one. So, once again, the finish is supposed to look like this. It’s part of the product’s rustic appeal. You can see through to the grain of the wood and you can feel the grain of the wood. If that’s not to your liking, there are other low loft beds.

Bottom Line

Well, why don’t I just sum it up with the words of an anonymous buyer:

Amazing. Everything about it is five stars!
