Introduction

The Scandinavian line of bunk beds from Max & Lily ushers in a clean, minimalistic look that I have to admit appeals to my personal tastes. Simple and comfortable, unencumbered with dust-gathering ornaments. Using neutral colors and wood accents, it sort of feels tied to nature.

The bed is just over 50 inches tall, which is more or less the norm for a low height bunk bed. The mattress top lies at about 42-44 inches here, depending on how thick the mattress is. That’s low enough to assuage any safety concerns that come with using a bunk bed, and it’s certainly low enough for the bed to fit into pretty much any room, no matter how high (or low) the ceiling is.

The lower height of the bed is achieved mostly by cutting on the under bed space; the lower bunk sits practically on the floor here. Furthermore, the space between the low and high bunk had to be reduced some as well, to the specified 31 inch. That’s roughly 5 inches less than is the case with regular-height bunk beds. This is not unimportant information, as it will probably influence the decision who will sleep on the lower bunk; the taller the person, the more cramped the situation will appear down there, and it might not be comfortable enough for an older kid.

The guardrail height is specified at 14 inches. That’s a very solid guardrail and it will easily accommodate an 8 inch mattress and still stay comfortably within the safety regulations. Note that the manufacturer recommends a 5 inch mattress to be used with this bed, and this does make a lot of sense. On the upper bed you get more free guardrail (always a good idea), and on the lower bed you get more space between the two bunks. Note that the 31 inch space between the two beds I mentioned earlier does not include the mattress, so, with a 5 inch mattress in place that space quickly shrinks to 26 inches. With an 8 inch mattress it shrinks to… you get the picture.

Scandinavian Twin Low Bunk Bed - view of the ladder and the upper bunk slat support.

The ladder is angled and hooks to the bed with metal fasteners for a secure connection. The three rungs are wide and comfortable and grooved to prevent slipping. The ladder can be attached to either side of the bed. It protrudes into the room just shy of 13 inches.

As is the case with all Max & Lily bunk and loft beds, the weight capacity for the top bunk is specified at 400 lbs. That is a very respectable figure, in large part probably due to the centered metal rod that runs the length of the bed and supports the mattress slats. You can see part of it in the image above.

The Scandinavian low loft bed is available in 4 finishes: blonde, black, black-and-blond and white-and-blonde.

What Users Say

This is a pretty fresh bunk bed line so, at the time of this writing, there were only a few dozen ratings on it across different shopping sites. By and large, they are very positive. Most reviewers agree that the bed feels sturdy and well made. ‘High quality’ and ‘very solid’ are a couple of other oft repeated phrases that back up the premise.

Pretty much all reviewers agree the Scandinavian low bunk bed is a looker. Beautiful, looks great, lovely design — are some words used to describe it.

Assembling the bed should not be too difficult, according to the majority of users. However, there are some dissenting opinions on this. I’ve seen a one star review based entirely on the buyer’s inability to put this bed together, and she did not mince words in expressing her frustration about it.

Other than this, negative reviews are very few and have mostly to do with missing hardware and damaged pieces.

Bottom Line

The Scandinavian low bunk bed is a modern looking piece of kids’ furniture that would be a great fit for a modern, minimalist kid’s room. While it’s not the least expensive bed on the market, it won’t break the bank either. The ratings on it are still relatively few, but I think the manufacturer’s reputation more than makes up for it.
