Introduction
The first thing that caught my eye about the Modern Farmhouse Twin Size Loft bed was: there is no ladder here. How does one get up on that tall bed? Certainly there is no staircase. Surely they didn’t forget to bring the ladder to the photo shoot, right? Right?
Then I noticed the opening in the guardrail at the foot of the bed and subsequently my attention was caught by the grooved side planks attached to the boards. And I realized this must be the built-in ladder mentioned in the product description. Hmmm… Clever, actually, very clever. It will probably make a few moms wary or doubtful if their little ones can make the climb safely, but I’d wager most kids will have zero problem with it. And it is a very economic solution, space-wise, plus it looks very farmhouse-y.

That mystery solved, let’s take a closer look at the product. As the name says, this twin loft bed is going for that chic rustic vibe, and I for one think it is succeeding. The simple wide planks unmistakably convey that rural, bucolic feel, while the rounded corners add a bit of a modern twist. The flush, color-matched hardware, the distressed finish — the manufacturer certainly spared no effort in creating the impression.
Speaking of the finish. As mentioned, it is distressed, which can be achieved in different ways. In this case (according to the manufacturer), each Modern Farmhouse bed is applied with a paint dip instead of a spray. In practice this means variations in color and coating may occur, making each bed sort of unique. Which is kinda cool. But. It’s important for you to understand that so that there aren’t any surprises when your shipment arrives and you open the box. In short, if you’re not into uneven paint and textured feel this might not be the bed for you.
The bed is 70 inches high, which is about average for a loft bed of this sort. The under bed clearance is 55 inches. That’s a lot of space this bed opens up for you to utilize any way you like. Make it a lounge area, play area, storage area, sleep area… Note that, due to the bed’s height, you’ll need at least an 8-foot ceiling room to put it in. If that’s not an option for you, take a look at lower height loft beds instead. In fact, there is actually a lower version of this very loft bed available as well.
The guardrail is specified at 13.5 inches here. This means you can go for a mattress up to 8 inches thick and still be in compliance with the safety regulations. The manufacturer recommends a 5 to 7 inch thick mattress. This is a sound recommendation, as it’s always best to have as much of free guardrail as possible, especially if the bed occupant is a restless sleeper.

The Modern Farmhouse loft bed has been tested to withstand 400 lbs of static weight. That is a respectable figure, there are few loft beds that can match it, let alone surpass it. As seen in the image above, this has been achieved by adding a metal rod that runs lengthwise in the middle of the bed and supports the seven mattress slats. It’s such a simple reinforcement measure, hard to understand why don’t all the manufacturers employ it.
The bed is available in 4 finishes: White Wash, Driftwood, Barnwood Brown and Pecan.
What Users Say
At the time of this writing there were about 60 ratings on this bed at Wayfair (average 4.6 stars) and about 20 at Max & Lily (average 4.7 stars). Not a huge amount, but enough to reach some conclusions.
The Pros
Quality Of Build: By and large the users seem to be very happy with the quality of this loft bed. ‘Super sturdy,’ ‘very sturdy’ and even ‘extremely sturdy’ are the most oft repeated expressions in user reviews. Closely followed by ‘great quality’ and ‘well built.’ ‘Awesome’ and ‘amazing’ feature in there too. The bed seems to fare well over time as well, as confirmed by this satisfied buyer: ‘Have had two of these holding up beautifully over the last 2 years.’
Ease Of Assembly: Assembling this bed is easy. That seems to be the opinion of a vast majority of buyers. I don’t really recall a dissenting opinion. It does require two people on occasion, some even say three people are needed for some parts, but that’s expected with a loft bed. Someone needs to hold those boards up. Note: many users point out that the box the bed arrives in is quite heavy (141 lbs, according to the manufacturer), so you’ll either need some help hauling it in or carry it inside piece by piece.
Design: The bed gets a lot of praise on appearance. It’s being called anything from ‘super cute’ via ‘lovely’ to ‘beautiful.’
The Cons
There are some buyers who feel the bed is wobbly and not very sturdy. Such opinions are few, though.
One user complained about the mattress support slats being too far apart, wondering why the manufacturer didn’t add a few more to ‘make the mattress stable.’ That is actually not a bad point, I have seen it raised before, especially in cases when a foam mattress is used. The manufacturer does offer a premium slat roll with double the amount of slats, but of course you need to pay extra for that.
There are some complaints about the finish. Mostly they come from buyers who didn’t do their homework and were unaware they were buying a product with distressed finish. However, I’ve also seen a couple of complaints by users who knew about distressing, they were just not happy with its quality. One described their bed in pecan finish as looking ‘super drab and dusty looking brown’ instead of ‘warm and rich.’ Another portrayed the paint job as a ‘solid meh,’ adding that it ‘looks like someone didn’t do an even paint job and just rushed it.’ But maybe that’s exactly the point?
Bottom Line
If the rustic vibe is what you’re after you should definitely put this loft bed on your shortlist. It has overwhelmingly positive reviews and is made by a reputable manufacturer from quality material. It complies with all safety regulations and the 400 lbs weight capacity surpasses most of the competition. Just be aware of the distressed finish.
