Introduction

This twin sized loft bed by Maxwood Furniture is a typical example of a modern furniture design. It features a slatted headboard and footboard with flush, color-matching hardware for a clean look that’ll fit in pretty much anywhere.

But good looks is only half of the story. If that. What you want in a loft bed most of all is sturdiness and stability, and this one fares rather well in that regard too.

The specified weight capacity of 400 lbs is more than most other loft beds can manage. This was made possible by adding a centered metal rod to support the mattress slats. Simple, but effective. In addition, layered plywood mattress slats are used which, according to the manufacturer, are more durable and pliable than standard wood slats. Secure metal-on-metal bolt connections are there to sturdy up the construction.

The 14 inch guardrails provide enough protection to be able to accommodate up to an 8 inch mattress and still be well within the safety regulations. The manufacturer recommends a 5 inch mattress, though. To be on the safe side.

Classic Twin Size Loft Bed in clay finish - the ladder detail.

The ladder is angled and features five wide grooved steps to prevent sliding. It attaches securely with metal hooks as seen above. The manufacturer states it was designed to withstand the weight of one 200 lbs person.

Classic Twin Size Loft Bed is available in up to 4 finishes: white, gray, clay and pecan. Of particular interest is the clay finish, as it’s the only one that sports a distressed surface rather than a smooth one. This is quite noticeable in the ladder detail image above. Here’s how the manufacturer describes it:

Clay is a multi-layered, rich gray-brown finish accented with white wire brushed texture.

As you can see in these images, Twin Size Loft Bed comes in several different configurations. Let’s look into them.

Twin Size Loft Bed With Bookcase

Starting simple, with just some book shelves for storing, well, some books and other everyday items. The bookcase is part of the design and cannot be removed. It can, however, be placed on either side of the bed. It might also contribute to the bed’s stability, what with the added mass and extra binding points.

  • Approximate shelf dimensions: 38.5” W x 12.8” L x 17.2” H
  • Overall product weight: 126 lbs

Twin Size Loft Bed With Bookcase And Desk

You really should add a desk to the above introduced bookcase setup because, well, why would you not? They go together like a wish and a smile. Loft beds and desks, that is. Every loft bed should have a desk below it. Or at least beside it. The desk seen here can also be positioned facing outwards if you really have something more important to place underneath the bed.

  • Desk dimensions: 28.5” H X 41.5” W X 15” D
  • Ships in two boxes

Twin Size Loft Bed With Wraparound Desk

This one’s my favorite. A nice big desk wrapped around the entire loft bed. That’s how you do it. A perfect study/workstation area. With plenty of storage as well. And the added benefit of making the structure more stable.

  • Side desk dimensions: 16” L x 42” D
  • Back deck dimensions: 78” L x 15.5” D
  • Overall product weight: 191 lbs

What Users Say

By the time of this writing I have perused close to 300 reviews on Classic Twin Size Loft Bed. At Wayfair, when taking into account all the different configurations, the average rating comes to about 4.5 stars. At Max & Lily it is a little higher.

The Pros

Most reviewers describe the loft bed as very sturdy or super sturdy, very well made, of great or excellent quality. Solid wood material is highly appreciated by almost everyone; it is said to be of ‘very good quality’ and the pieces well made. Hardware is also described as good quality. The desk and shelves are portrayed as spacious. There is not much talk of wobbling. One buyer wrote she had to get up there to hang the curtains and it ‘felt very safe and comfortable.’

There is plenty of praise on the bed’s appearance. It is called cute, beautiful, even timeless.

The assembly seems to be a point of contention. While plenty of users wrote it was very easy, the instructions thorough and easy to follow, plenty also thought otherwise.

The Cons

Most negative posts have to do either with the assembly instructions or the finish. Specifically, the clay finish. As I wrote earlier in this post, the clay finish seems to be of distressed variety, hence the surface is rough and the paint a little uneven. This is intentional, and the intention is to give the bed that rustic, coastal vibe. Apparently this did not sit well with some of the buyers, who probably expected a smooth finish. If that’s you as well, do yourself a favor and go for white or gray. Or pecan, if available.

As mentioned, the assembly instructions are not receiving unanimous approval. The main problem seems to be the lack of words. The directions are pictures only, no explanations or clarifications. One buyer called them ‘absolutely terrible,’ lamenting that ‘no screws are labeled, so you have to figure out the sizes and which one is correct.’ Another one was a bit more lenient, saying ‘directions were a little confusing on some parts because it is just pictures.’ And so on. I guess ultimately everyone managed to put their beds together, words or no words.

There is some dissent on the product’s sturdiness; a few buyers called it ‘shaky’ or ‘rickety.’ Some report slight marks and blemishes. One buyer complained about a broken ladder step after only a few weeks. There is also an occasional report of a chemical smell that hangs on for a few days.

Bottom Line

If you are on the market for a sturdy, good-looking and not too expensive twin size loft bed made out of real wood, you probably don’t have to look any further. As always, go through the reviews yourself to get a better feel for the product before hitting that ‘Buy’ button.
