Introduction

I am somewhat fascinated by the fact that this bed is made of solid acacia wood. It is such a rare occurrence. Acacia is a strong and durable hardwood, with a fine texture, naturally resistant to moisture and decay. It is one of the hardest woods available on the market, making it highly resistant to scraping and scratching. Given all its qualities it is a mystery to me why more manufacturers aren’t taking advantage of it, but — that’s all the more reason for us to look at this product.

The Ilario loft bed features the chest of drawers as an inherent part of design. It is not something that can be moved and placed elsewhere in the room. If you take a closer look, you’ll see that one side of the bed is dependent on it for support. While this could be seen as a downside, I do believe it also makes the product sturdier.

The said chest of drawers ships fully assembled, which is both good and not so good. It’s good because, well, you don’t have to do the assembling yourself, and it seems it’d be quite an undertaking. On the other hand, this is an unwieldy and probably quite heavy piece of furniture and, depending on your situation, you’ll need help of at least one other person to move it inside come delivery time.

The Ilario loft bed, at 64 inches, is not very high. Usually lofted beds in this category go up to 70-72 inches, even 75 is not unheard of. It is more of a mid-height loft in that regard. The 48 inches of vertical space under the bed is still enough, though, to accommodate a study desk, an easy chair, or perhaps another bed.

I have not seen the height of the safety rail specified anywhere, however, with the above specified measurements and a little basic math we arrive at a figure of 16 inches minus the thickness of the mattress support slats. I feel pretty confident in saying that you could put a ten inch mattress there and still be in compliance with the safety standards which state that there must be at least 5 inches of space between the top of the mattress and the top of the safety rail.

At the time of this writing the bed was available in two finishes: sand and chestnut.

Both finishes are distressed; that is to say the paint is purposely rubbed or scraped off to get that worn look, that coastal or farmhouse vibe. There is much ado about that in the product page. The official wording is, it is a ‘7-step textured, brushed, wash-glazed and lacquered finish.’ It contains either a light neutral base tone (sand finish) or a rich dark brown base tone (walnut finish). Both bases are supposed to bring out the character of the acacia wood. Finally, the finish is top-coated with a subtle sheen.

Note that a gray finish is also mentioned in the product page, but it does not seem to be available at the moment. You can find some pictures of it in the user comment area.

I was somewhat surprised to learn the slats on this loft bed are metal. I find that to be an interesting choice, if a little bit at odds with the whole farmhouse spirit. Unfortunately there are no pictures showing how this looks in place, from the frog’s perspective, there is only this:

In any case, at 48 inches of height those slats will not be in anyone’s line of sight unless they are sitting on the floor under the bed, so I suppose it doesn’t matter much. And they do appear to be quite effective, if we are to judge by the declared 400 lbs weight limit.

What Users Say

At the time of this writing there were exactly 25 ratings on the Ilario loft bed at Wayfair. So, not that much. The average rating was 4.6 stars. More than three quarters of reviewers gave the bed five stars.

There was only a single one-star review, from a dissatisfied buyer who received the bed with a cracked main guardrail, a problem which apparently did not get resolved to her satisfaction.

There are some complaints about the dresser as well. As mentioned earlier, it comes already assembled, but, according to one user, the packaging is quite poor and due to that ‘it is impossible for it to come undamaged.’ Another user corroborated that with her own experience of shipping-related damage, while yet another had an issue with the construction of the dresser in general, portraying specifically the bottom of the drawers as ‘extremely thin.’

On the plus side, many buyers characterize the bed as great and awesome, as sturdy and well made. They love the abundance of storage and the room underneath. The appearance of the bed gets a lot of praise too, especially the distressed wood effect.
