Introduction

The Woodland line of bunk beds is made by AFI Furnishings which was one of the first manufacturers to make use of the eco-friendly rubberwood in the production of furniture. Rubberwood is a medium-density hardwood originating from the Pará rubber tree. The primary use of this tree is for harvesting latex foam (used in the production of rubber), but once it has fulfilled that role it is cut down and made into excellent furniture making material. Hence its eco-friendly label. Or rather these days it is called sustainably sourced hardwood.

Good material alone is not enough to create excellent furniture, though, so the manufacturer makes it a point to inform the potential buyers that they use 26 steel reinforcement points and strong mortise and tenon joints to bind their bunk beds into a sturdy and unwavering whole.

Another mark of quality when it comes to bunk beds is good mattress support. The Woodland full over full is specified to withstand 400 lbs of static load on the top bunk and an impressive 600 lbs on the bottom bunk. This is made possible by the very good slat system consisting of 14 slats per bed plus additional centered support rods on both beds. On top of that, the bottom bunk features 4 vertical posts that are propped against the floor to additionally support the perpendicular support rods. Hence the excellent weight capacity on the bottom bunk.

The Woodland bunk bed is of average height, 66 inches, which means it will fit comfortably in an 8 foot ceiling room, but anything lower than that might bring some discomfort to the person residing on the top bunk, depending on their height.

The under bed clearance is 11.25 inches. Just a perfect amount to house either a couple of storage drawers or a trundle bed. Both options are available.

The space between the two bunks, slat kit to slat kit, I would say is roughly 36 inches. This is my estimate based on the image below. We have the measurement between the two side rails which amounts to 33.75 inches, but the slats are fixed approximately in the middle of those 4 inch side rails, so that adds an estimated two inches to the equation. Bottom line, with a 6 inch mattress in place there should be about 30 inches of free space on the bottom bunk. Plenty enough, even for a taller person.

The guardrail height is not specified on the manufacturer’s website. On one of the shopping sites the specification says 13 inches, but I believe that to be false. Looking again at the measurements above, and with the help of some basic math, I think we can conclude the guardrail should be about 15 inches high. Corroborating that conjecture is the fact that the manufacturer specifies the maximum mattress thickness at 9 inches which would be against the regulations if the guardrail were a mere 13 inches high. There needs to be at least 5 inches of free space between the mattress surface and the top edge of the guardrail.

This bunk bed is equipped with a staircase instead of a ladder. There is no need to play up the usefulness of a staircase when it comes to safe access to the top bunk. That is understood. In addition, a staircase almost always provides some storage space as well, in this case in the shape of some roomy bookshelves.

The staircase is just over 14 inches wide, which is a bit narrower than is the case with some other bunk beds with stairs, but that can also be a good thing, as it cuts the length of the bed by full 10 inches compared to some of the competition. And, in a cramped room, 10 inches might just make a crucial difference when trying to fit the bed in. In this regard, it might also help that the stairs can be attached to either side of the bed.

Another neat feature of this bunk bed and proof that some manufacturers do try to get on with the times are the two USB ports built into a bed post.

If additional sleeping space is more your cup of tea, fret not: the Woodland full size bunk bed comes in that configuration too. I’m just not sure what do you do with the 4 vertical posts that provide the additional support for the lower bunk. I mean, surely they have to be removed, but that will weaken the lower bunk’s mattress support.

What Users Say

At the time of this writing there were hundreds of ratings on this bunk bed across different shopping sites with the average rating usually hovering at about 4.5 stars.

Quality Of Build: Most buyers share the opinion this bed is well made. ‘Very sturdy’ is the most common expression I’ve come across browsing the reviews. Some say it’s much sturdier than expected. I’ve seen the bed compared favorably with furniture from a much more expensive popular brand. Several users mentioned it can hold adult weight without a problem. One user reported the bed survived the moving process, came apart and went back together just fine. Also, it has been mentioned on multiple occasions that the bed has held up well after years of use.

Unsurprisingly, the stairs get plenty of favorable mentions both for facilitating access to the top bunk and for the storage capacity which some users regard as surprisingly capacious.

Most complaints regarding the bed’s quality have to do with damaged pieces: scratches, cracks, dents. Several users were not happy with the paint job, which is a bit strange considering how the manufacturer likes to advertise their long lasting five-step finishing process. I’ve also seen a few warnings about the smell, which for some people took a while to wane.

Ease Of Assembly: The Woodland bunk bed is not complicated to assemble. That seems to be the shared opinion of the large majority of buyers. The instructions are supposedly easy to follow. Some say the job is time consuming, others say they’ve done it in an hour. The one criticism I’ve seen about the process is that you have to drill your own holes for some screws.

Bottom Line

Being made of hardwood, the Woodland full over full is priced a bit higher than your average bunk bed, hence the buyer expectations are also higher. Judging by the user feedback, however, the bed seems to be meeting these expectations just fine.
