Introduction

This is a full over full version of the Powell Heavy Duty Metal Bunk Bed (branded as Leonel at Wayfair). I reviewed the twin version here

so I’ll just state the basics here and point out some differences.

The first thing that catches the eye with this bunk bed is the tubular design. Pretty much everything here except the 4 load-bearing side rails is made of tubular steel. From the heavy gauge 3 inch steel tubes that serve as bed legs, via 20 tubular mattress slats, to guardrails and the thin vertical slats making up the bed ends.

Even the ladder is made of tubular steel, but that is one thing many buyers wish the manufacturer would reconsider. Those thin round rungs are by most accounts pretty uncomfortable on the feet; some flat anti-skid rungs would do much better.

On various shopping sites you will find the declared weight capacity for the top bunk on this bed to be either 600 or 400 pounds. At Wayfair you can actually find both figures on the same page. However, I’m going with the 300 lbs here because that’s the figure stated in the manufacturer’s Installation & Assembly PDF and I’m considering that to be a more reliable source of information.

The guardrail height on the Powell Heavy Duty bunk beds is specced at 14 inches. The maximum recommended mattress thickness is 8 inches, which leaves us with 6 inches between the top of the guardrail and the top of the mattress, comfortably within the safety regulations. Notice the guardrails covering the full length of the bed on both sides, with no opening to allow easier access to the top bunk. Some kids might struggle going over the rail.

Powell Full Over Full Heavy Duty Metal Bunk Bed is available in 3 finishes: black, white and pewter. White is featured at the top of the page, black and pewter below.

The bunk bed can be separated into two individual beds, but there are two ways to go about it, as seen below. You could just take down the top bed and be done with it. It’s not going to look very nice, but it’ll do the job and that top bed with its all-round safety rails would make for a nice toddler bed.

You could also do it the proper way: disassemble the beds and use the end boards from the top bunk (upper panels) as headboards, and the end boards from the bottom bunk (lower panels) as footboards, as seen in the second image (white finish).

Finally, here’s all the measurements you need to be familiar with. Note the that the bed itself is 57.75 inches wide, but the ladder sticks out an additional 16.25 inches, so do make sure there is enough space in your room.
