Atlantic Furniture bunk beds are now sold under the AFI Furnishings brand. The link below will take you directly to their Amazon store:
Introduction
AFI Furnishings offers three lines of bunk beds. The Columbia line is their oldest and most prestigious product, at least if we take the price as our criteria. It is also the only one still available in a configuration with just a ladder instead of a staircase. The Woodland and the Westbrook series only come in a configuration with stairs.
At first glance, disregarding the finish, there is not much difference among these bunk beds. They all feature the classic mission style design with thin vertical slats, which makes for a simple but elegant look. Columbia does appear just a little bit more involved, though, more traditional, with those protruding horizontal slats and the subtle arch on the lower bunk. There is also the full board at the head and the foot of the bed; this probably goes some way in explaining the difference in price. The Westbrook line features a lovely arch on the lower bunk as well, and not so subtle one. The Woodland series is all no-nonsense straight lines (and perhaps the better for it).
As mentioned, all three bunk bed lines are available in a configuration with a staircase. While this raises their price considerably, a staircase does also offer considerable advantages. Climbing up and down is more comfortable and safe, for one thing. And then there is storage. In the case of Columbia and Westbrook, each of the four stairs houses a roomy drawer, while still leaving some space underneath for books and such. Woodland beds do not have any closed drawers, but that does leave more freely accessible room underneath. The downside of the staircase configuration? It takes more space overall, so do make sure there is enough of it in your room.
The manufacturer states that the Columbia beds are available in several high-build finishes, but at the time of this writing only two were available: walnut and white. The Westbrook line is available in espresso, gray and white, while the Woodland bunk beds come in gray, walnut and white.
The Columbia and Woodland bunk beds are available in twin-over-twin, twin-over-full and full-over-full configurations. The Westbrook series only comes in twin-over-twin and twin-over-full arrangements.
All lines offer either under-bed drawers or under-bed trundle as an option.
History And Material
Atlantic Furniture has started out in 1983 as a manufacturer of pine waterbed frames. Since then, the company has abandoned the use of pine and has expanded its product assortment to offer a wide range of furniture including bunk beds for children made of the increasingly popular eco-friendly hardwood.
Also known as the rubber tree, this material has recently gained a considerable footing in the manufacture of high-end furniture due to its dense grain, stability, attractive color and acceptance of different finishes. It is also considered environmentally friendly, since it makes use of trees that have been cut down at the end of their latex-producing life cycle and are always replaced with new seedlings.
Atlantic Furniture bunk beds are praised for their sturdiness and durability, good looks, comfort and ease of assembly. In order to make them as stable and robust as possible the company utilizes the mortise and tenon joinery, but also their own innovative hook and pin system and plenty of steel reinforcements. In the looks department, an especial mention deserves Atlantic’s high build five step finishing process — which produces a durable finish that looks great and lasts for years.
