Introduction
If this loft bed looks to you like something straight out of Mad Men, you’re not the only one; this was exactly my thought when it first caught my attention. And it’s no wonder. Mid-century modern is a design style that emerged in the mid-20th century and is characterized by simplistic, functional wooden furniture. Its present manifestation is unashamedly retro and often makes use of bright accent colors to emphasize this point.
Which is the exact description of the Mid-Century Modern Twin Loft Bed, down to the white melamine accents up top which stand in place of traditional guardrails. Clean-lined no-frills design, constructed from solid wood with a warm finish, the bed will fit in nicely into almost any setting.
At 68 and a half inches the Mid-Century Modern is perhaps a smidgen shy of the average height for this type of loft bed (some go over 72 inches), but still it provides an ample 53 inches of vertical clearance underneath to be used at your discretion. Lounge area? Play area? Storage space? Or perhaps another bed, why not. Up to a queen size may fit in there, but if you have such a bed already do make some measurements to be certain. In the Q&A section at the manufacturer’s website they state the inside measurement between the posts is 67.5 inches.
The ladder is done right here. Angled, with wide comfortable rungs, grooved to prevent slipping. Metal hooks provide secure connection to the main rail. It does take up some space (13.25 inches, to be exact), but I would argue that it more than makes up for it by providing a safe and comfortable access to the loft. The ladder can be attached either to the side or to the end of the bed, whatever your situation requires. You could even order an additional ladder and rig the bed with two of them. Just for the heck of it.
Some notes from the manufacturer you should be aware of: the ladder should not be used until properly installed. It will support only one user at a time, weighing no more than 200 lbs.
The guardrail height is specified at 14 inches. This means you could theoretically furnish the bed with a 9 inch mattress and still be in compliance with the safety regulations. That said, the manufacturer suggests a 5 inch mattress, not to exceed 8 inches. That’s a sound recommendation. It’s best to have as much of free guardrail as possible, especially if the bed occupant is a restless sleeper.
Like all Max & Lily loft beds, the Mid-Century Modern is specced to withstand 400 lbs of static weight. It rarely gets better than that, and the manufacturer achieves this figure by adding a perpendicular metal rod running in the middle of the bed to provide an additional support to the mattress slats. The Mid-Century Modern loft is available in 2 finishes: Pecan-And-White for a warm and a bit lighter touch and Walnut-And-White if you’re more inclined toward darker shades.
What Users Say
At the time of this writing the average rating for this bed at Max & Lily was 4.9 stars, while at Wayfair it was 4.3 stars. That’s out of about 60 ratings in total, so not really much, but I think enough to draw some conclusions. Note that on Amazon the average was 4.1 stars out of almost 50 ratings, but that included a bunk bed from the same line.
The Pros
Quality Of Build: Skimming through the reviews, the general feeling is that buyers are quite happy with the quality of this loft bed. ‘Sturdy’ is the word most often used in that regard. A few quotes by satisfied users: ‘very sturdy and doesn’t creak at all’ ; ‘very well built and designed’ ; ‘made of high quality materials’ ; ‘quality product at a good price’ ; ‘quality is exceptional, equivalent to the higher end brands’ ; ‘bed is much more sturdy than I thought.’ It goes on.
There is also a testimonial by a buyer stating that her husband and herself are reading to their 6-year-old son everyday and, in her words, never once was she worried about the bed not being able to hold them.
Ease Of Assembly: It is easy to assemble this bed. There are many references to it, almost every reviewer feels the need to share their experience. The instructions are reportedly straightforward and easy to follow. Some say the assembly is totally manageable for one person, others admit they needed some help. Holding stuff up and such.
Design: Users love the looks of this loft bed. They refer to it as ‘elegant and simple,’ ‘sleek and simple,’ and also pretty, beautiful, cool, modern, timeless…
The Cons
Most of the less than stellar reviews come from buyers who have received the product with some parts damaged. More often than not this applies to the white melamine guardrails which seem more susceptible to the vagaries of transport.
Usually the damage is small and sometimes users just decide to live with it, but a lower rating in such a case is totally understandable. If the damage is more significant (a cracked rail or something), living with it is not an option, though. The part needs to be replaced and, at least according to some reports I’ve seen, this process seems to go more smoothly if you’ve bought the bed directly from Max&Lily.
Other than that, I’ve seen some complaints about missing screws and mislabelled parts, which led to some difficulties in assembly. Some users mind that the slats are not painted. But that’s minor stuff, really.
Bottom Line
If you like it, buy it. The bed comes from a reputable manufacturer, is sturdily built, boasts an excellent weight capacity, and has gathered a decent amount of mostly great reviews. And that retro look is quite fetching, I must say.
