Review

The Colorado Twin over Twin Bunk Bed is a classic exhibit of a clean, uncomplicated, modern scroll design featuring the characteristic vertical slats of the Mission style. Although all Atlantic Furniture bunk beds get plenty of praise for their sturdiness and quality of build, the Colorado bed reviewed here is a head and shoulders above them all in that respect -- which really is visible at a first glance. Just one look at the images in the column to the right (click to enlarge), will be enough to convince you of its heavy duty built; taking into account the one inch hardwood long rails, rock solid 2 x 4 posts and built-in modesty panel, finding a sturdiest bunk bed than this one becomes quite a challenge. The mere fact that the weight capacity for the top bunk is specified at 200 pounds instead of the usual 150 speaks volumes. Of course, it is also the quality of material that contributes to the structure's stoutness; the Asian hardwood (also known as rubberwood) used here is highly respected for both its physical qualities as well as its environmental friendliness. Note that the Colorado bunk bed comes in three of Atlantic Furniture's high build five-step finishes. To make use of the empty space under the bed, storage drawers or trundle bed are available.

The following is a short summary of what the buyers have to say about this product. Note that most of the quotes and opinions are compiled from specialized stores and consumer oriented websites.

The Good

Durability -- in theory, this bed is supposed to be one of the sturdiest wood bunk beds out there. Pictures also look great. But do the actual users agree? Yes. The large majority does. The product is characterized as sturdy and strong, of good quality; in fact, more than one reviewer mentioned (not without some surprise) that the quality was better than expected. The bed is reported to hold up well against the abuse of energetic youths and apparently does not rock or squeak even with a 200 pound adult testing its worth.

Attractive design -- this you can check out yourself by clicking on one of the thumbnails to the right, and although it won't be the same as having an up close and personal experience it will give you a general idea of the bed's stylish presence.

Ease of assembly -- most reviewers didn't seem to encounter much trouble when putting this bed together. By and large a couple of hours seems to be enough for two adults to complete the job. In fact, according to some even the instructions are redundant.

The Not So Good

We've only been able to find one single complaint about this bunk bed. Two complaints, that is, but from the same user. He reported that the bed arrived with one of the parts broken, but he then did get a replacement quickly and without any hassle. Also, some parts on his bed were apparently not sanded completely. And that's it.

Bottom Line

This bed is better than we expected -- that is probably the most often heard phrase from buyers of Colorado bunk bed. Quite what did they expect is not clear, however, there is no doubt that the bed's stout, heavy duty build has made many a favorable impression out there. So, if your kids have been pleading for a bunkbed but you still have misgivings about the idea, if you are concerned about safety and reliability -- then this is one children's bunk bed that should not escape your attention. True, it is somewhat more expensive than Atlantic Furniture's similar products, but then, you can't really put a price on your peace of mind. Or, better yet, on your child's safety.
